Is anyone familiar with this ridiculous policy? In any case I declined the prescription because the whole exchange made me uncomfortable. She made me feel like some kind of criminal, also the invasion of privacy felt really… icky? Needless to say I was shocked! I have never had any substance use issues and had been prescribed small doses of Ativan on a couple of occasions (not for the last seven years) for anxiety while flying. But when I asked if I could have a small Ativan prescription to help with the anxiety (this was recommended by my therapist) over my diagnosis and upcoming surgery she told me that if she prescribed Ativan or any similar drugs I would need to be randomly drug tested over the course of the next year. As you might imagine all of this was very upsetting and I felt adrift getting this big (bad) news after losing my long-time PCP. I have some fairly serious health stuff going on including finding out I had a “cancer gene” and would need a hysterectomy to mitigate a very high risk of endometrial cancer.

I saw the NP (usually fine), as the PCP was booked out one full year (!!!). I tried one new doc through the practice and wasn’t terribly impressed so tried another at the Watertown location. My Atrius PCP of 22 years retired last year. But I’d love for others to weigh in on this. Recently the practice was acquired by Optum so perhaps my experience reflects that. I’ve been a patient with Atrius/Harvard Vanguard for 20+ years. NP told me I would need to be randomly drug tested over the course of the next year if she prescribed a small one-time Ativan prescription.
